Reviewed the 2nd semester addendum to the syllabus. You can find a copy of this on the link to the syllabus on this page. Just scroll to the bottom for the addendum that describes the grading practices and that there are now 4 deadlines for late work and they coincide with the progress report schedule:
HOMEWORK: Finish Character Study: Chapter 1 worksheet and read Chapter 1 by Monday Warm up: Ch. 2 vocab review In class today we took notes on character. You'll keep these notes in your Academic Toolkit. They're number G9. You can find the presentation below. We then watched a video on StudySync of students discussing the characters so far in Gatsby. Then you started to look at the characters of Nick Carraway (the narrator) and Jay Gatsby, making inferences about who they are based upon evidence from the text. There is a handout that goes with this you'll need to grab from the absent bin if you weren't here today.
HOMEWORK: Webquest due at midnight. Warm up: Chapter 2 vocab review
We went to the library to check out The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I handed out a vocabulary chart and demonstrated the reading comprehension strategy: making predictions. HOMEWORK: Continue reading chapter 1. Webquest Warm up: Chapter 1 vocab review
Gatsby Webquest. Assignment is on Google Classroom. You'll complete the webquest by Thursday at midnight to help you have a better understanding of the time in which this novel was written and takes place. HOMEWORK: Finish webquest I passed out a warm up sheet called a Lifeline. Each week I will collect your Lifeline on Friday. We will use warm ups to focus on our language skills so Lifelines will go in the gradebook under Language.
Warm up: Chapter 1 review. Write the first 10 roots and their definitions on your Lifeline. Then add a vocab word example for each. ANNOUCEMENT: We will review chapters 1-4 vocabulary over the next two weeks. Since this vocab is designed to get you ready for the SAT, you need to remember it! So we will have a vocab test on chapters 1-4 again on Monday, January 27th. Each vocab test going forward will include words/roots from all the lists we've had this year. Organize binders. Take out everything from "assignment" section and staple. Either leave this packet in your binder, or find another home for it. Keep everything in the Vocab and Toolkit tabs. Quickwrite: You can write about what you did over break and/or you can write about what goals you’re setting for yourself in 2020. You need to write at least ¾ of a page. HOMEWORK: None. Wow! Its 2020 and the beginning of a new decade. Each new decade has marked a significant chapter in my life. In the 1990s I was a child. In the 2000s I was a teenager. In the 2010s I was growing into an adult; getting degrees, a career, a husband, and a baby. In other words: responsibilities. But, I love all these responsibilities!
As this new year begins, I find it fitting, as most people do, to make some goals for the year. There are many articles and studies that show that individuals who set goals are more productive and happy than those that don't set goals, even if they don't achieve them. (Check out this article from Forbes.) So here are my goals: Read 20 books in 2020. - I don't often have time/make time to read for pleasure anymore. With everything going on in my life, it can be hard to make this a priority. Reading used to be a huge part of my life (hence why I'm an English teacher) and I want to get back to the thing I love. Spend less on material items and more on experiences. - I look around my house and I see so much stuff. Stuff I don't need, stuff I don't want, and stuff that's just clutter. I want to spend less money on buying stuff and instead spend my extra money on experiences like travel, concerts, plays, and other adventures that are more fun than sitting on the couch surrounded by stuff. Continue to push myself. - This is less of a goal for this year and more of a philosophy on life that I've always had. I want to make sure I continue to push myself to improve. Improve at the gym, improve as a teacher, improve my relationships, improve as a cook. I want to always strive to improve rather than just sit and be complacent. Three seems like the perfect number of goals. I'm ready to start a new year! I know there will be many exciting memories to be made which is something I am really looking forward to. Meditation
