I handed back your thesis statement today with feedback. Today, you will create an outline of your essay. Your outline will look like this:
Thesis statement (revise using feedback) I. Topic Sentence 1 a. Supporting Detail b. Supporting Detail II. Topic Sentence 2 a. Supporting Detail b. Supporting Detail III. Topic Sentence 3 a. Supporting Detail b. Supporting Detail Each topic sentence needs to include the title and author of the text and a theme statement for that text. HOMEWORK: Finish your outline by Thursday.

Today, we wrote a rough draft of our thesis statement. On a sheet of paper, put an MLA heading. 1) Write your THEME statement you wrote down on Friday. 2) Write down the 3 texts you will be writing about in your essay. 3) Put #1 and #2 together into one sentence; this is your thesis! Step 2: Theme Tree Map Create a tree map for the four texts that we read and list all the themes you can think of for each.
Step 3: Theme Statement Find the presentation on theme statements on this website in the "Writing Center". Turn the one word themes that you listed in Step 2 into a theme statement including identity following these guidelines. HOMEWORK: Finish your theme statement. Discussion of the poem. Then make a Venn diagram comparing the theme of religion to identity. Then use all your resources (all the assignments we've done with this text) to help you write a short response to the prompt on StudySync. HOMEWORK: Finish if not done in class. Quickwrite: What is the best book you have ever read? Why did you like it? How long ago did you read this book? Have you read anything interesting since? When was the last time you read any book? Why?
Well-Read Wednesday! We're going to start doing some independent reading during class time. Reading is so good for your brain and its FUN! I want to help encourage you to love reading. You will be asked to write and talk about your book in class, so keep reading outside of the classroom too! HOMEWORK: None. Just go find a book! Close Read: On Being Brought from Africa to America
I demonstrated a reading comprehension skill where you look for details and see what else they relate to in the text to understand it better. We did group discussions over the focus questions (above the poem in the StudySync assignment) and then shared out full class. I encouraged you to take notes over the course of the class period so you will be prepared to write a short response on the poem on Thursday. HOMEWORK: None. NO SCHOOL!
