Finish your quiz questions. Warm up: Find definitions on your own for the following words. Vocab #3 Root: meter, metr - measure barometer, geometry, kilometer, metric system, metronome, odometer ****ANNOUNCEMENT**** Notebook checks are being replaced with participation points. I will be walking around during warm ups and other activities to check for participation. This is for a weekly grade of 100 (20 points per day). Chapter 19 was assigned as reading over the long weekend. We reviewed the contents of the chapter and did a journal entry based on the question, "why is Grant unhappy at the end of chapter 19?" Since learning how to be mature writers is extremely important, we are now going to answer our journal questions using the format ACE. A - Answer the question. C - Cite evidence from the text, with quotation marks and a page number E - Explain how that piece of evidence helps support your answer to the question. Once done, do a "Say Something" in your journal with chapter 20 on your own. As you read, pause at least five (5) times to respond to the text. If you feel limited by the sentence starters you can respond in a different way. HOMEWORK:
Finish your "Say Something" for chapter 20 in your journal. No warm up because we had a vocab quiz. We read chapter 18 today and did the "Say Something" activity that you can find at the link below. HOMEWORK:
Read Chapter 19. Warm up: Commonly Confused Words Part 3
As we read through chapter 17 of A Lesson Before Dying, students used sticky notes to note where the author uses different dialects (ways of speaking), adds characterization, introduces a very important point (V.I.P.), or uses imagery. On each post-it explain what made you put the sticky note there. I then passed out a few questions to think further about chapter 17 in the context of the book. HOMEWORK: Finish questions on chapter 17. Since today was a minimum day, we did not have a warm up.
Today we played a game called "Match Mine" with our vocabulary words. If you were absent, use the Quizlet to the right to practice with your words. Warm up: Write a sentence for each of your vocab words.
Today we went over some business after reviewing our sentences from the warm up. First, we went over what is expected when there is a substitute. Secondly, I discussed the cloning letters. I didn't receive letters from half of first period and from half of sixth period. Since this is a major grade, those students who didn't turn in their letters had their grades drop immensely. Due to the number of missing letters and below passing grades, I allowed those students to turn in the missing letter for partial credit. This will be due Monday October 11. After this conversation, I allowed students to continue working on the assignment from yesterday. Since students worked so well today, I allowed this assignment to be due tomorrow. HOMEWORK: Finish your description of what the word "superior" means to our characters. Today there was a substitute but here is what you should have completed:
Warm up: Vocab #2 4/4 TEST FRIDAY!! (Quizlet --->) Working in groups, closely read through chapter 8. I want you to focus on the word "superior". What does this word mean to the characters in our story? What makes someone superior in this society? Does Grant Wiggins's agree with what society decides? What is the only way for Grant to feel superior, according Matthew Antoine (Grant's teacher)? |
